free crochet pattern for this messy bun hat
kids size (see hat size chart for specific measurements on other sizes)
MATERIALS NEEDED:
9mm crochet hook
caron cakes yarn (1 ball)
scissors
ABBREVIATIONS:
– ch = chain
– sl.st = slip stitch
– sc = single crochet
– hdc = half double crochet
– st = stitch
– dec = decrease
– cl = close
PATTERN:
– ch 9
– sl.st into 2nd ch from hook and in each ch all the way down the row
– ch.1 and turn work
– sl.st in back loop of each st down the row, ch.1 and turn work (repeat this row for 79 rows)
– fold in half and attach with sl st, evenly down creating a seam to turn this “strip” into a “band” (do not fasten off)
– ch.1, sc evenly all the way around, cl round w/sl.st & ch.1
– hdc in 1st st, sl st in next.. continue on all the way around alternating these two stitches
– do not close rounds… continue around making 1 sl.st in each hdc from previous round and 1 hdc in each sl st from previous round
ad:
– continue on with this pattern for 18 rounds
– [sc dec x2, *sl st in the next st & hdc in the following st*, repeat *to* for 10 sts, sc dec x2]… continue [ to ] all the way around
– [sc dec x2, *sl st in the next st & hdc in the following st*, repeat *to* for 4 sts, sc dec x2] … continue [ to ] all the way around
– repeat for another round
– 1 regular round with no decrease
– cl w/sl st & fasten off
– hide tail ends through stitches inside hat with yarn needle
**to give a more secure fit around the brim of hat (because this yarn is quite stretchy) you can help avoid the hat losing shape or stretching out by:
– re-attach yarn to the very outside edge of the hat at the back where the seam is
– ch.1, *sc dec x2, hdc in the following 10 sts*
– repeat *to* all the way around, finish round with sl.st in the ch.1 space
– fasten off and hide tail ends with yarn needle
